If you read this blog, I am going to assume that you have some interest in secondhand book stores. And that you used some Google-Fu to look for ones that are worth visiting. Sooner or later you will stumble upon one name: Mercer Street Books. Having been in the business for over 3 decades now, it is pretty much a New York Institution.

Layout
You will enter a large rectangular room, divided into different section by shelves and tables. While the amount of books is impressive, it never feels overly crowded. If the weather allows it, there will be a small cart outside.
Selection
While their SciFi/Fantasy section is rather small, overall they carry a solid selection of books, covering all genres. They also have several shelves with vinyls in the center of the room though they treat them rather poorly (you should never stack vinyls). If you come with kids, tell them NOT to open that box that says “Beefcakes”. Google it if you are curious.
Vibe
Quiet and relaxed. It won’t win any interior design awards but that doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy your hunt. The owner won’t go out of his way to start a conversation but he is very friendly and easy to talk to.
Verdict
It is a nice place and with decent prices. Well worth a longer visit.
Location
Mercer Street Books & Records is in walking distance of NYU. The closest subway station is Bleecker Station.
